Dear President Tajani,
I am happy to inform you that Greece is now among the member-states that have a solid framework on the legal gender recognition. During the past week the majority of the Hellenic Parliament voted in favour of the Government's proposal, which provides the necessary institutional safety net of self-determination to the people who wish to legally change their gender identity. This bill is harmonizing our country's level of standards with the UN Declaration of Human Rights and the European Convention on Human Rights
Providing a safe life based on human dignity, is a key-point on the Greek Government's agenda. The respect and protection of human rights, especially those of persons in high risk of exclusion, should be a critical pillar of any governmental policy.
Building a legal framework that tackles inequality, discrimination and social exclusion should a common strategy, a common struggle against existing dividing lines between people.
Confident that we share these values, I remain at your disposal to provide you with further information if needed.
With Kind Regards,
Dimitrios Papadimoulis
EU Parliament Vice-President
SYRIZA MEP
