Serious consequences of overfishing in the Mediterranean

Serious consequences of overfishing in the Mediterranean

According to recent press reports, overfishing in the Mediterranean is causing serious problems for the sea life there, which need to be dealt with immediately(1). In fact, as environmental organisations are warning, about 96% of the fish stocks are overfished, meaning certain species, including cod and red mullet, are seriously endangered. In light of the constantly increasing needs of human society, there is a clear threat to Mediterranean fish populations, so steps must be taken to scale back fishing there and prevent the situation getting worse.
In view of the above, could the Commission please state:
(a) Is it aware of the damage caused by overfishing in the Mediterranean?
(b) What steps is it proposing to safeguard fish populations in the area, and what restrictions could be imposed that would not affect small and medium-sized fishers reliant on the seas for their living?
